There are three areas of forest reserve in Wilayah Persekutuan that are potential areas for ecotourism. These areas are Bukit Nanas, Sungai Besi and Sungai Seputeh forest reserve. But until now, only Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve was develop for recreational purpose by Forestry Department.
Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve was established as recreational forest on July 29, 1970 when Selangor Council of Goverment Meeting (MMK) decided to develop this forest reserve for tourism.
The Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city, in between Jalan Ampang and Jalan Raja Chulan, This forest cover an area of 10.05 hectares and in considered as a " Green Lung of Kuala Lumpur.
A UNIQUE HERITAGE
Bukit Nanas Forest is considered unique because:-
- It is one of the original tropical forests that still stand tall in the middle of a metropolitan.
- It is the oldest forest reserve in this country.
- In the course of billion of years of changing time it still retain its originality.
A LITTLE BIT ON HISTORY
Bukit Nanas Forest reserve was formerly known as Bukit Weld Forest Reserve was gazetted for public purpose under section 8, 1903 Land Enactment and was operational on August 28, 1906. In 1934, this forest reserve was gazetted as wildlife and bird sanctuary under section 7 (1), Bird and Wildlife Protection Enactment, 1925. Futhermore, in 1950, Forest Department of Peninsular Malaysia, established Virgin Jungle Reserve on this area for purposes of researchs and experiments.
From 1906 until now, the forest area shrunk from original 17.50 hectares to 10.05 hectares because of many development projects. This forest is classified as a Lowland Forest Dipterocarp abundant tree spp, are Keruing Bulu ( Dipterocaspus Baudii), Kapor ( Dryobalanops Aromatica), Meranti Pa'ang (Shorea Bracteolata), Mersawa (Anisoptera Spp), and Non Dipterokarp, Jelutong ( Dyre Costulata), Pulai (Alstonia Spp.), Kedondong ( Canatium Spp.) Karas ( Aquilaria Malacensis) and Buluh Betong (a species of bamboo).
WHAT IS AVAILABLE AT BUKIT NANAS
When you are here at Bukit Nanas:-
- You can visit forestry Information Centre which exhibit collections of forest product and its use fullness and also historic materials of the Forestry Department.
- If you like exploring, there are two jungle tracks that can bring you through this forest reserve. The Denai merbau which is 361 m. long and Denai Jelutong (300 m. long).
- A cement track (from Jalan Ampang to Jalan Raja Chulan) is also provided for those who like an easy walk or jogging.
- If you want to stretch your arms or legs, an open gymnaseum is available.
- You can see many species of animal, including colourful butterflies, a lot of insects, monkeys, squirrels, exotic birds and others.
- This forest also has many species of plants such as palmaes, climbers, herbs and many others.
- Basic facilities are provided here. You can familiarize yourself with the name of trees while enjoying the nature here.
- Playground for children is provided for those who bring along their families.
- Basic facilities such as restroom, parking lot and others are also provided.
- Menara Kuala Lumpur entrance is available.
HOW TO GET HERE
This forest reserved is located in the middle of Kuala Lumpur and surrounded by a chain of excellent roads, so it is very easy to reach here.
Visitors can reach here on their own vehicles or use public transportations. The main road is Jalan Ampang, Jalan Gereja and Jalan Raja Chulan.

VISITING SCHEDULE
This forest is open for visitors from 7. 00 am to 6. 00 pm everyday including weekend and public holidays.
FEES
- Free of charge.
DO'S AND DON'T'S
- Felling, cutting or damaging any trees or plants are prohibited.
- Littering is prohibited. Please use the litterbins.
- While in the forest take nothing except photographs and leave nothing except footprints.
CAUTION
The Forestry Department shall not be held responsible for any mishap, damage and loss of personal belongings while visiting the recreational area.
